Gowen is a watercolorist whose greatest inspiration comes from nature. “Mostly I paint landscapes and flowers. At home or as I drive through the countryside, I’m constantly aware of my surroundings, noting colors, shapes, lights and darks. I like to do series of paintings that let me experiment with, for instance, how changes of color affect the mood of the work. My art helps me to be at peace with the world outside.” Seven years ago Benita and her husband moved to Rappahannock County, which reminds her of her childhood in Latvia. “I’m elated by the beauty of this area and it never fails to move me. I hope this passion shows in my work.”
