Putnam was born in 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts. He started his first forge in Shelburne Center, Massachusetts, in 1973, and moved to Virginia in 1976. His work has largely been architectural commissions from New England to Florida and west to Chicago. His most notable work was the three colubarium gates for Washington National Cathedral. Putnam’s work has usually been classical in design and always utilizing traditional joinery.
