SUMMARY:Queen Lear
DESCRIPTION:This hour-long adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear uses the original poetic language\, with the narrative trimmed and shaped to reflect our interest in the themes of family dynamics among a mother and her daughters\, the disbursal of generational wealth\, aging in a female body\, the blind expectations of privilege\, and loyalty and love of chosen and blood family. It features six actors playing multiple characters\, original music\, and striking ensemble work. The show was created and is performed by Cottage Industry\, an all female troupe based in Charlottesville. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Click here to reserve seats.

SUMMARY:RAAC Movie - Being There
DESCRIPTION:This satirical comedy\, directed by Hal Ashby and based on the 1970 novel by Jerzy Kosinski\, is about a simple gardener named “Chance”\, played by the iconic Peter Sellers\, who improbably mutates into “Chauncey Gardiner”\, an influencer among America’s movers and elites. The film is a profound social commentary on media lords\, and the people of privilege and power they follow. \nEarning an Academy Awards’ Best Actor nomination for his starring role\, Sellers demonstrated his comic mastery as Chauncey\, bolstered by an all-star cast that includes Shirley MacLaine and Melvyn Douglas\, winner of the Academy Awards’ Best Supporting Actor. \nFilm accolades include the British Academy Film Award for Best Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Adapted from Another Medium. In 2015\, the Library of Congress selected Being There for preservation in the National Film Registry\, finding it culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant. \nThough RAAC film screenings are free\, donations are always welcome to offset production costs. Hearing assistance is available.

SUMMARY:RAAC Movie - Beauty and the Beast
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of unexpected love on the Eve of Valentine’s Day\, RAAC will show Jean Cocteau’s 1946 classic “La Belle et La Bete\,” or Beauty and the Beast\, at the Little Washington Theatre\, at 6 o’clock on Friday February 13 ( a test run of an earlier start for RAAC movies). Based on the 18th century fairy tale\, the story unfolds like a beautiful but disturbing departure from the ordinary\, with plenty of special effects created without any of today’s computer-assisted techniques. \nCocteau’s treatment of the eerie romance has been called “realism of the unreal. ” Audiences can watch a credible\, if dreamy\, young woman’s journey from horror to empathy to love for the beast\, who has taken her hostage as part of a shocking deal imposed on her father when he is staggered by a business failure. Jean Marais plays the lonely\, misunderstood beast\, as well as two competing suitors for the affection of Belle\, played by Josette Day. \nReports of the filming experience in post-war France add to the fascination. Marais would endure five hours of make-up time\, with fur strips attached to his face and hefty incisors inserted in his mouth. And during the production period\, Cocteau himself was stricken by a painful skin disorder requiring penicillin every three hours. \nThis French film includes subtitles\, and RAAC provides hearing assistance\, helpful in taking in the French dialogue and the sumptuous score by the French composer Georges Auric. \nThis special evening is free\, but RAAC welcomes donations to cover productions costs. \n

SUMMARY:Auditions for The Dining Room
DESCRIPTION:“The Dining Room” by A. R. Gurney is a comedy of manners\, set in a single dining room where 18 scenes from different households overlap and intertwine. Each story is focused around a different family during different time periods who has in their possession the same dining room furniture set\, manufactured in 1898. Portrayed with compassionate humor and abundant humanity\, the action is a mosaic of interrelated scenes —some funny\, some touching\, some rueful—which\, taken together\, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). \nIf you would like to audition please complete an audition form here.

SUMMARY:RAAC Movie - Sentimental Value
DESCRIPTION:This multi-layered Norwegian drama was directed by Joachim Trier and earned the Oscar for best international feature\, a historic win for Norway following years of nominations. The movie follows an aging filmmaker embarking on what will likely be his final work. The making of the film involves a return to a family home he left decades earlier\, and a traumatic history during his own childhood. The superb acting by the women playing his estranged daughters make this a psychologically nuanced film\, whose brilliant ending affirms that art can reconcile and integrate all that history has left broken and damaged.
