SUMMARY:RAAC Talk - Ken Grossinger
DESCRIPTION:The next RAAC talk will feature Ken Grossinger\, who has published Art Works: How Organizers and Artists are Creating a Better World Together. Some artists stand apart from hot-button issues of the day\, but throughout history\, others have deployed their creativity to push for reforms they support. Art can expose injustice\, offer commentary or mobilize public awareness. Grossinger points to Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative\, which brought together lawyers historians\, artists and architects to construct a cluster of museums in Montgomery\, Alabama\, to delve into\, and dramatize\, the legacies of slavery and racism. In various cities\, hundreds of murals mark the 2020 murder of George Floyd. In Art Works\, Grossinger writes that “if it hadn’t been for music\, the civll rights movement would have been like a bird without wings.” \nThere is no admission charge.

SUMMARY:RAAC Movie - La Chimera
DESCRIPTION:This film has surprised and delighted audiences on multiple fronts: great acting by Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rossilini; fabulously designed tomb-raiding scenes in Tuscany\, grubby commerciality amidst antiquity collectors\, and magical timelines that glide between past and present. O’Connor plays a renegade British archeologist who is haunted by a lost love\, while edging towards a new attachment\, amidst the antics of a group of ‘tombaroli’ who dig up beautiful\, long-buried objects. The acclaimed Italian-language film lives up to its mysterious title\, which is linked to a creation “that takes parts or aspects of different kinds of things.” \nThe film comes with subtitles. Admission is free\, but RAAC appreciates donations to offset production costs. Hearing assistance is available. \n

SUMMARY:RAAC Talk - Lee Miller's Photography
DESCRIPTION:Rappahannock author and art scholar Jane Livingston will explore Lee Miller’s photography during this free RAAC program. \nRappahannock movie-goers last year enjoyed Lee\, the acclaimed film featuring American photographer Lee Miller’s exploits as a war correspondent in Europe for Vogue magazine. Miller’s artistic story will be further explored by Livingston in a talk and slide presentation. The former curator and associate director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, Jane Livingston authored Lee Miller: Photographer\, the definitive book on Miller’s shaping contributions to modern photography. The book accompanied a 1989-1990 exhibit that toured seven cities in the U.S. \nMiller’s life in Paris in the 1920s revolved around her artistic and romantic relationship with Man Ray\, the American artist who became a leading figure in the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. Miller’s works during those years\, and later\, became some of the most memorable images of the era\, when photography was evolving as both an art form and a communication medium for news. \nLivingston will share insights into this pivotal moment for modern art\, along with observations about the life and psychology of Lee Miller herself. \nHearing assistance will be available.

SUMMARY:Queen Lear
DESCRIPTION:This hour-long adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear uses the original poetic language\, with the narrative trimmed and shaped to reflect our interest in the themes of family dynamics among a mother and her daughters\, the disbursal of generational wealth\, aging in a female body\, the blind expectations of privilege\, and loyalty and love of chosen and blood family. It features six actors playing multiple characters\, original music\, and striking ensemble work. The show was created and is performed by Cottage Industry\, an all female troupe based in Charlottesville. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Click here to reserve seats.
