DESCRIPTION:RAAC’s July movie is the 2024 drama\, I’m Still Here\, based on the 2015 autobiography written by Brazilian novelist and screenwriter\, Marcelo Rubens Paiva\, about his father–Rubens Paiva–a dissident politician who went missing\, and was murdered during Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971. The film depicts the impact of Paiva’s disappearance on his family’s life\, especially on the writer’s mother\, Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres)\, an activist coping with the loss of her husband\, Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello). \nAmong the film’s many accolades\, Torres became the first Brazilian\, South American and Portuguese-speaking actor to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture–Drama. The film also won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film\, becoming the first-ever Brazilian-produced film to win an Academy Award. \nThe RAAC film is free\, but donations are welcome to offset production costs. SUMMARY:RAAC Talk - Lee Miller's Photography
DESCRIPTION:Rappahannock author and art scholar Jane Livingston will explore Lee Miller’s photography during this free RAAC program. \nRappahannock movie-goers last year enjoyed Lee\, the acclaimed film featuring American photographer Lee Miller’s exploits as a war correspondent in Europe for Vogue magazine. Miller’s artistic story will be further explored by Livingston in a talk and slide presentation. The former curator and associate director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, Jane Livingston authored Lee Miller: Photographer\, the definitive book on Miller’s shaping contributions to modern photography. The book accompanied a 1989-1990 exhibit that toured seven cities in the U.S. \nMiller’s life in Paris in the 1920s revolved around her artistic and romantic relationship with Man Ray\, the American artist who became a leading figure in the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. Miller’s works during those years\, and later\, became some of the most memorable images of the era\, when photography was evolving as both an art form and a communication medium for news. \nLivingston will share insights into this pivotal moment for modern art\, along with observations about the life and psychology of Lee Miller herself. \nHearing assistance will be available.

It features six actors playing multiple characters\, original music\, and striking ensemble work. DESCRIPTION:RAAC and Foothills Forum will present a film/talk-back featuring the compelling documentary–News Without a Newsroom–at Little Washington Theatre\, Friday\, November 14 at 7PM. \nThe film\, directed by Oana Martisca and funded by the Knight Foundation\, opens with wonderful images of the golden age of local news\, featuring the bustling newsroom of the Miami Herald. It continues with comments by dozens of notable journalists\, describing the transformation that moved quickly in the wake of advertising losses. It ends with a call to action\, looking at new kinds of nonprofit and other organizations committed to news coverage that can restore the public trust. \nFollowing the film will be a conversation about the evolving wave of innovation\, featuring Rappahannock News publisher Dennis Brack. \nThe film/talk-back is free. SUMMARY:RAAC Movie - Beauty and the Beast
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of unexpected love on the Eve of Valentine’s Day\, RAAC will show Jean Cocteau’s 1946 classic “La Belle et La Bete\,” or Beauty and the Beast\, at the Little Washington Theatre\, at 6 o’clock on Friday February 13 ( a test run of an earlier start for RAAC movies). Based on the 18th century fairy tale\, the story unfolds like a beautiful but disturbing departure from the ordinary\, with plenty of special effects created without any of today’s computer-assisted techniques. \nCocteau’s treatment of the eerie romance has been called “realism of the unreal. ” Audiences can watch a credible\, if dreamy\, young woman’s journey from horror to empathy to love for the beast\, who has taken her hostage as part of a shocking deal imposed on her father when he is staggered by a business failure. Jean Marais plays the lonely\, misunderstood beast\, as well as two competing suitors for the affection of Belle\, played by Josette Day. \nReports of the filming experience in post-war France add to the fascination. Marais would endure five hours of make-up time\, with fur strips attached to his face and hefty incisors inserted in his mouth. And during the production period\, Cocteau himself was stricken by a painful skin disorder requiring penicillin every three hours. \nThis French film includes subtitles\, and RAAC provides hearing assistance\, helpful in taking in the French dialogue and the sumptuous score by the French composer Georges Auric. \nThis special evening is free\, but RAAC welcomes donations to cover productions costs. \n
