This film has surprised and delighted audiences on multiple fronts: great acting by Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rossilini; fabulously designed tomb-raiding scenes in Tuscany, grubby commerciality amidst antiquity collectors, and magical timelines that glide between past and present. O’Connor plays a renegade British archeologist who is haunted by a lost love, while edging towards a new attachment, amidst the antics of a group of ‘tombaroli’ who dig up beautiful, long-buried objects. The acclaimed Italian-language film lives up to its mysterious title, which is linked to a creation “that takes parts or aspects of different kinds of things.”
