RAAC Talk – Lee Miller’s Photography
Rappahannock author and art scholar Jane Livingston will explore Lee Miller’s photography during this free RAAC program.
Rappahannock movie-goers last year enjoyed Lee, the acclaimed film featuring American photographer Lee Miller’s exploits as a war correspondent in Europe for Vogue magazine. Miller’s artistic story will be further explored by Livingston in a talk and slide presentation. The former curator and associate director of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Jane Livingston authored Lee Miller: Photographer, the definitive book on Miller’s shaping contributions to modern photography. The book accompanied a 1989-1990 exhibit that toured seven cities in the U.S.
Miller’s life in Paris in the 1920s revolved around her artistic and romantic relationship with Man Ray, the American artist who became a leading figure in the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. Miller’s works during those years, and later, became some of the most memorable images of the era, when photography was evolving as both an art form and a communication medium for news.
Livingston will share insights into this pivotal moment for modern art, along with observations about the life and psychology of Lee Miller herself.
Hearing assistance will be available.
